Some of it may seem like common sense, but it never hurts to revisit your pet’s environment, diet, and exercise regime – especially after a long, wet winter that probably had both owners and pets hunkering down for a few months.

Six tips for a happy bunny from Edgewood Veterinary Group

  1. Diet is always important, so why not refresh your memory by reading up on how to feed a rabbit? The best food is timothy-based pellets, with no colourful pieces, and timothy hay. Your rabbit should be eating more of the hay, and not too much of the pellets. Rabbit love fruit and vegetables but shouldn’t eat them before they are at least 3 months old.
  2. Recycled paper bedding is best, but watch for bedding with larger pieces as they can block the intestines. Change it at least once a week, with a spot clean when needed.
  3. A hut can help a rabbit feel safe and secure. Give your pet a rain and heat-proof box or tunnel to hide in.
  4. Cages. Do not use a cage with wire flooring. If a solid-bottom cage gets dirty, you must clean it to avoid urine scald.
  5. Out and about. Give your rabbit a run in the house or in a room at least once a day.
  6. Health checks. If your rabbit has runny eyes, nose or crusty ears bring it to see one of our vets. Check to make sure nothing is stuck to your rabbit’s bottom – if it is you may need to increase fibre in the diet. Also check your pet for bumps or sore areas. If you notice any dramatic behaviour changes, bring him/her to the vet.

Follow this guide and you will be raising a healthy, happy rabbit, who will be a great companion for years to come.
