The day you bring your new kitten home is an exciting one for all the family, but it is important to be prepared so that you and your kitten get off to a good start. Our infographic covers the main points you need to think about.

Here we cover 7 essential tips for owners of new kittens.

1. Food
   • Provide a good quality, meat-based diet that is designed for kittens

   • Provide access to clean, fresh water at all times
   • Do not place the kitten’s food or water close to the litter tray
2. Diseases
   • You can protect your kitten against a number of serious infectious diseases by ensuring that they are fully vaccinated

3. Neutering
   • Unless you plan to breed from your cat, make sure that it is spayed or castrated at about 4 months of age
   • Neutering has a wide range of benefits for your cat and is extremely important
4. Litter training
   • Make sure that your litter box is big enough, that it is easily accessible, and that the litter is always clean
   • Lift your kitten into the tray first thing in the morning, after every meal, and just before you go to bed; she will soon get the message
5. Socialising
   • The most important period for socialisation in kittens is between 2 and 7 weeks of age
   • If your kitten is older than this when he arrives with you, it is still important to start socialising him as soon as possible, so that he grows up to be confident and well-adjusted
   • Handle your kitten often, and introduce him to different people, to healthy, vaccinated cats, to other healthy animals (e.g., dogs) and to normal household sounds and events
6. Veterinary care
   • Veterinary care and advice is important throughout your cat’s life, including when they are very young
   • At your kitten’s first visit to the vet, he will undergo a thorough physical examination, and you can get advice on subjects such as vaccinations, worming, feeding, socialising and behaviour
7. Bed
   • Make sure you have a comfortable bed ready for your kitten – but don’t be surprised if he decides that an old cardboard box is more to his liking
