Our Practice - Our Heritage

Edgewood Veterinary Group has been around since the 1950's, having moved from Danbury around 1955 to 37 High Street, Maldon. (Which is currently a flower shop, beside the Moat Hall.) The practice then named "Walker, Greg & MacMeekin" operated from three surgeries Burnham-on-Crouch, Witham and Maldon. Later for geographical purposes the Witham surgery merged with the Maldon practice.

In 1962 Bill and Betty MacMeekin purchased a small farm and put a side a plot of land for the Edgewood site.  The Maldon High Street practice moved to Purleigh in 1965 and was known as the "Edgewood Surgery".

"The Original Edgewood Surgery" Circa 1964

The current surgery at Purleigh was extended in the early 1970's adding a new kennel room and consultation room and a waiting area to the existing building. During this time the group purchased Wendy Titheridge's Veterinary Practice in Wantz Road in Maldon and completed the group of surgeries we have today.

Andrew Scott joined the practice in 1968 as a Veterinary Assistant and when Bill MacMeekin retired, Andrew become a business partner with Hamish Neil until Hamish retired in 1985. Andrew then became sole owner of the practice. In August 1994 Jürgen Theinert joined the practice as a Veterinary Assistant when it was still a traditional practice, doing a mixture of farm, equine and companion animal work.

In 1995 the practice moved into the lime light and a successful "fly on the wall" television series was made by Anglia television about Edgewood and the work of a Veterinary Surgeon.

In 2000 Andrew Scott became vice president of the British Veterinary Association  (BVA) and in October 2001 was elected as the president, an honorary position held for a year. The British Veterinary Association (BVA) is the national representative body for the veterinary profession with over 11,000 members. In promoting and supporting the interests of our members, and the animals under their care, the BVA is committed to developing and maintaining channels of communication not least with government, parliamentarians and the media.

In 2001 Jürgen joined Andrew in partnership and over the following years the practice adapted to the changing demands in an all animal practice. Farm work became ever decreasing, and it was found unsustainable to continue with the large animal side of the business and the decision was made to concentrate on companion animals only. This was primarily in response to the poor economics associated with milking cows.

A few years later Andrew reached retirement age and Jurgen became Principal of Edgewood. Andrew continued to work for the practice in a part-time position until fully retiring a few years later.

Jürgen has continued to head up the practice, and over recent years has updated the facilities at our Maldon and Burnham branches and has recently redeveloped the Purleigh site with a state of the art building designed specifically for our small animal patients and visitors.
