Ultrasound Examinations

Ultrasound is an imaging technique in which the deep structures of the body can be visualised by recording echoes of ultrasonic waves which are directed into the tissues. Ultrasound waves are considered to be entirely safe.

This type of imaging is invaluable for the examination of internal organs and for pregnancy diagnosis.

Generally your pet will not require sedation or general anaesthesia for an ultrasound examination. However, if your pet is nervous or does not like lying still, it may be necessary to administer sedation or general anaesthesia to allow a thorough ultrasound examination.  It is always necessary to clip some hair from the area being examined as the ultrasound probe needs direct skin contact (along with gel) to allow the sound waves to pass into the organs being examined.
