Helping us to help your pets

Some pets need to take medicines on a regular basis and we can issue repeat prescriptions without seeing them every time. Repeat prescriptions are usually for between one and two months’ supply at a time, but only for the original condition diagnosed.

What are the benefits of repeat prescriptions

  • Your pet does not have to visit the surgery every time you need a prescription.
  • You can order a supply of medication to suit your circumstances. For expensive medication a monthly supply may be more appropriate than every two months.

How can you help us and your pet

  • Please give us plenty of time to prepare the prescription. We would like 48 hours. This allows the veterinary surgeon to check your pet’s records against the medicine requested. Occasionally some medicines are in short supply and some leeway is necessary for manufacturer’s delays, or for special orders.
  • Please check the medicine at the time of collection; sometimes different names may appear on the packet, but it is the same drug inside. The nurse or receptionist can answer any queries at the time.
  • Please order your prescription at the surgery you will be collecting it from.
  • Please remember to collect the prescription once it is ordered, or telephone to let us know that you no longer require it.
  • All patients on regular medicine need to be examined by a veterinary surgeon every three to six months, depending on your pet’s illness. This allows a review of progress, whether the medication is still required or whether another medicine may be more suitable. A consultation fee is charged for this examination. Vaccination time is also a convenient review time.
  • Certain diseases / treatments need regular monitoring by means of a blood test. The frequency of the blood test will be determined by the disease being treated and how stable your pet is on the prescribed medicine/s.
  • Please let us know if any possible side-effects occur on the medication. Do not wait for the review consultation.
  • In accordance with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons guidelines, we can issue a written prescription for you to take to a pharmacist to supply the medicine/s. There is a prescription fee payable for each medication prescribed. You will need to pay the pharmacist directly for the medicine.

Return of Medicines

  • We are legally not able to return any dispensed medicines to our shelves. We are happy to dispose of any medicines purchased from us at no cost to you. If your medicines have been purchased elsewhere, a disposal fee will be levied.
  • Many food products are covered by manufacturers’ guarantees and a call to us or to their helpline will normally result in a full refund.
